Types of insurance

Part of planning for the future is making sure you’re covered if something bad happens. This means having enough insurance to help pay for living expenses in place of your income. It also means giving financial protection to anyone else who relies on your income.

Your insurance options

There are three different types of insurance you can get through super. It’s important to know what each type of cover is for. Not all insurance is automatic. You’ll need to check what insurance you have and work out how much you need.

Death cover including terminal illness

Death cover provides a payment to:

  • your beneficiaries if you die, or
  • you if you are diagnosed with a terminal illness

Total and permanent disablement cover

If you become sick or injured and are unlikely to ever work again, you shouldn’t have to worry about money. Total and permanent disablement cover is also known as TPD. It can provide a lump sum payment to you to help cover your expenses.

Income protection cover

If you’re unable to work due to an illness or injury, you might be out of work for a while. Income protection cover can help while you’re not earning an income. This means you can focus on your recovery.

Insurance for NSW Police and Ambulance Officers

We also provide insurance for eligible sworn NSW Police Officers and eligible NSW Ambulance Officers. If you’re eligible for this insurance you need to be aware of the terms and conditions, which are different to what is described on this website. Refer to the relevant Insurance handbook for details.

If you are a NSW Police Officer or Ambulance Officer the features of the insurance offer to you will be different to what is described on this website.

Police Officers' Insurance

This provides eligible officers with death including terminal illness cover. This is generally in line with the requirement of the Police Act NSW (1990). If you’re eligible for this insurance you need to be aware of the terms and conditions. For details refer to the NSW Police Officers' Insurance handbook.

NSW Ambulance Officers' insurance

This provides eligible officers with death including terminal illness cover. This is generally in line with the requirement of the NSW Ambulance Death and Income Protection (State) Reviewed Award 2022. If you’re eligible for this insurance you need to be aware of the terms and conditions. For details refer to the Ambulance Officers Insurance handbook.

Work out how much insurance you need

You’ll want to make sure you have enough insurance for your needs. How much you’ll need depends on a lot of factors like:

  • your age
  • if you have a partner
  • if you have children or other dependants
  • goals and future living expenses.

Calculate your insurance

Our insurance calculator can provide an estimate for how much you might need and what it will cost. Simply answer a few questions such as your age, salary, number of dependants and expenses.
