Practical Ways to Support Healthy Ageing

About the Session:

This engaging, evidence-based webinar explores what it truly means to age well — moving beyond simply living longer to focus on living better. Delivered by Tom Eather, a qualified Physiotherapist with a Doctor of Physiotherapy from the University of Melbourne and a background in Strength & Conditioning, this session translates clinical research into practical, actionable guidance that participants can start applying immediately.

What we'll cover:

  • Understanding Longevity & Healthspan: Understanding the difference between lifespan and healthspan, and why the goal is to extend the years spent in good health rather than simply adding years to life.
  • What the Research Says: The three physical pillars that have the greatest impact on long-term health outcomes: leg strength, cardiovascular fitness (VO2 Max), and balance — and the striking mortality data that sits behind each one.
  • Australian Physical Activity Guidelines explained: A clear breakdown of recommended activity levels by age group, alongside the sobering reality of how few Australians are currently meeting them.
  • Cardio Training: How to structure and accumulate cardiovascular exercise across the week, using perceived exertion as a practical guide, with real-world examples to fit different lifestyles.
  • Resistance & Strength Training: The difference between resistance and strength training, key programming principles (frequency, volume, intensity), and a sample whole-body session to illustrate what this looks like in practice.
  • Balance Training: Simple, habit-stackable strategies to build balance into everyday life and reduce falls risk over time.
  • Putting It All Together: A sample weekly routine showing how cardio, strength, and balance training can be realistically combined.

Key takeaways:

You will gain a clear understanding of which physical attributes matter most for healthy ageing, practical benchmarks to self-assess current fitness levels, and concrete strategies you can implement straight away — without needing a gym membership or specialist equipment.
