Nine year citation a celebration for equality but more to do: Aware Super

30 July 2024

Aware Super is honoured to be one of only 25 organisations within the Financial and Insurance industry to achieve the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) Employer of Choice citation.

It also marks the ninth consecutive year the Fund has been awarded the citation, one of 41  businesses to achieve this.

Aware Super CEO, Deanne Stewart, also a WGEA Pay Equity Amabassador says she was pleased the Fund was one of 115 Australian organisations recognised for achieving excellence in progressing gender equality in the workplace, but signalled there is always more to do.

Ms Stewart said: “This citation is motivation to continue to lead, encourage and foster the conversation around gender equality as an industry and help break down unhelpful traditional norms so we continue to attract exceptional female talent.”

The Fund continues to find new ways to attract and recruit women to tradionally male-dominated occupation within the organisation through flexibility and role design.

Sonia Baillie, Head of Income Assets and mum of four, says the support of the organisation and its leaders has been crucial to her ongoing success within the Income and Markets team within Investments, particularly through flexibility and role design at Aware Super.

”For a gender-dominant sector to succeed in achieving equality and therefore diversity, role design that works for both the individual and team, along with the flexibility to implement it, is key."

Ms Stewart said over the last decade we’ve focused on driving equality across the entirety of the Fund including:

  • 67 per cent female representation at board and more than 50 per cent female representation at executive level
  • policy arrangements designed to support families including grandparents and menopause leave super on paid parental leave
  • equal work for equal pay
  • almost 54 per cent female representation across the organisation reflecting recruitment processes that deliver equal representation.

The Fund continues to focus on role design, flexible work practices and corporate policies that promote greater equality in the workplace, to attract, recruit and retain female talent to traditionally gender-dominated roles within Australia’s finance sector.
