Aware Super welcomes announcements from Assistant Treasurer, Minister for Financial Services The Hon Dr Daniel Mulino today on strengthening consumer protections in superannuation and improving access to financial advice.

In an address to the National Press Club in Canberra Dr Mulino announced a package of reforms including enhanced consumer protections in the self-managed super fund (SMSF) and managed investment scheme sectors, expanding intrafund advice provisions to retirement advice and progressing the creation of a new class of financial adviser.

Aware Super CEO Deanne Stewart welcomed the government’s commitment to strengthening the superannuation system.

“The Minister’s announcements are very welcome and represent important progress on boosting consumer protection and improving access to financial advice,” Ms Stewart said.

“Aware Super backs the Government’s efforts to make consumer protection more consistent across the system, to help ensure that no more Australians lose their hard-earned savings due to high-pressure selling of inappropriate or poorly governed investment structures.

“The reforms to financial advice are great news for Australians seeking support to make decisions about their super. Making advice more accessible and affordable to super fund members is critical to meeting the growing need for retirement advice and improving retirement outcomes.

“We know that members expect us to be able to answer their questions about super and retirement, and that when they get advice they feel more confident and are much more likely to take actions that improve their retirement outcomes.”

Ms Stewart said she looked forward to working constructively with the Government and industry as the reforms progress.
