As Head of Investment Strategy at Aware Super, Michael Winchester is responsible for leading the team that manages the fund’s asset allocation.
What is your role?
The Investment Strategy team manages the fund’s asset allocation, via the design of our MySuper Lifecycle strategy, and develops the strategic (target) asset allocation for each of the individual investment options. We also undertake research of economies and markets, using insights to adjust the asset allocation of our investment options over time, taking advantage of market dislocations and managing risk.
How do you invest members’ super?
The great thing about our role in Investment Strategy is that we get to look across the whole fund. To understand how to build robust long-term portfolios, we need to have a good handle on the drivers at play in each of the asset classes, then consider how the drivers interact and contribute to achieving the risk and return objectives for our investment options.
My team also looks after the liquid alternatives asset classes (readily tradeable but don’t act like shares or bonds). Here, we partner with some of the best investment managers in the world and benefit from their insights and guidance as inputs to our own active asset allocation process.
What motivates you?
I feel privileged to be able to make a difference to the retirement outcomes of our members who in their working life are helping our society, teaching our children, caring for our sick, and protecting our vulnerable. That I can do this leading a talented team, solving interesting problems, and doing cutting-edge research, is something I find enormously motivating. I’ve never in my career had such a great alignment of passion and purpose. I really couldn’t think of anything I’d rather be doing!
