How to save on tax & get a government boost

Adding money to your super from your take home pay can be a great way to grow your super balance and could reduce your tax.[S1] That’s because if you claim a tax deduction, eligible contributions are taxed at only 15% instead of your income tax rate, which could be as high as 45%1.

You can easily set up one-off or recurring personal, after-tax contributions into your super account via direct debit or BPAY®. And, it’s easy to claim your tax deduction online through Member Online.

Notify us

Complete a Notice of intent form on Member Online to claim a tax deduction for any personal contributions you've made for the financial year.

Receive your confirmation letter

We will send you a letter telling you we have received your valid notice. You’ll need this letter before claiming the tax return deduction.

Complete and lodge your tax return

Make sure you claim the amount of money you stated on your Notice of Intent to Claim.

55 year-old Mary earns $95,000 a year. By topping her super up by an extra $3,500, she saves $595 on tax now. Plus, she’ll have an extra $3,900 in her super account at retirement.2

  • Retirement balances are rounded to the nearest $100. 
  • Numbers are presented in today's dollars discounted by 3.5% (assumed AWOTE). 
  • Based on Aware female member aged 55, earning $95,000 p.a. and planning to retire at age 67. 
  • The member is assumed to have enough remaining under the Concessional Contributions Cap for the current financial year to contribute the additional amount as a concessional contribution 
  • Based on SG of 11.5% for 2024/25. This will increase to 12% on 1 July 2025 (where it will remain at 12%). 
  • Based on 2024/25 income tax rates. 
  • Investment returns are based on the Aware Super MySuper Life Cycle option, assumed to be CPI + 4% until age 55, reducing from CPI + 4% to CPI + 2.75% between the ages 55-65 (inclusive) and CPI + 2.75% from age 65 onwards. 
  • CPI is assumed to be 2.5% p.a. 
  • No insurance premium is considered

Important July 1 changes to your super

From 1 July 2025, the super guarantee, that is - the percentage of your wage that your employer is required to pay into your super account, will increase from 11.5% to 12.0%

The government-funded Paid Parental Leave (PPL) will begin on 1 July 2025. From 1 July 2026, payments will be made directly to individuals' superannuation funds. This policy is designed to reduce the impact of career breaks taken to care for young children on superannuation balances.
